During the Jacobite risings of the 18th century, when supporters of the Stuart claim to the throne attempted to restore the monarchy, Edinburgh Castle remained loyal to the Hanoverian government. Despite several Jacobite attempts to seize it, the castle never fell.
Military Modernization
The 18th century saw further military upgrades to the castle, adapting it for modern warfare. Barracks were built to house soldiers, and new artillery batteries were installed.
The castle became a major military garrison, controlling the city and acting as a base for operations across Scotland.

Decline of Military Importance
By the 19th century, the military importance of Edinburgh Castle began to decline due to changes in warfare and the development of newer fortifications elsewhere.

Tourism and Cultural Symbol
The castle opened its gates to the public and became one of Scotland’s most visited tourist attractions. The Honours of Scotland were put on display, and museums were established within its walls.
